Month Seven
Bouncing Baby.
Your baby can now support some of their weight on their legs and love to bounce. They should also be able to sit up unsupported (which will free hands for exploring, be aware) and will more than likely turn whilst sitting to reach a desired object.
I would strongly recommend one of those doorframe bouncers. Now I’m not saying all babies will enjoy these but ours did and we could leave her in it for hours, literally go down the shops, get some sleep in, go and wash the car, come back and she would still be bouncing will all the energy of a Duracell Bunny! (For those of you born after 1993 check the adverts on the internet and you will see what I mean!)

With summer seemingly just around the corner (the weather might suggest otherwise), many families will be looking forward to a relaxing summer holiday. However, alongside the promise of sun, sea and sand, there is also likely to be stress. Whilst holidays pre-baby might have been filled with wild nights and long lie-ins, your first trip with your little one is likely to be very different.

By six months your baby sees and hears the world almost as well as you do and their communication skills are expanding rapidly. Now I’m not saying you will be able to discuss the entire works of Shakespeare together, but you will be hearing plenty of squeals, babbling and bubbling sounds. Most babies at this age are repeating one syllable such as “ba,” “ga,” “da”. You can encourage your baby by repeating back and making a little game of it. “Sheep’s go baa,” and “da, da, dad.” You may feel like a bit of a fool at first but hey, you will soon get the hang of it.

A staggering 80%* of all car seats are used incorrectly! That’s right, 80%! We all think we’re doing the right thing in ensuring the ones most precious to us are safe while travelling in a car… but it’s scary to think many of us are not getting it right.

It’s now week 27 of my pregnancy, so only 13 weeks to go! I’m starting to feel very nervous and the thought of going through childbirth again scares me a little… I think it’s because I know what to expect this time. I am already struggling with sleep and feeling uncomfortable, and if anyone has any suggestions then I would love to hear them!?

Your child’s first birthday is an important event. While there’ll no doubt be plenty of cake and colourful presents to entertain them, it’s worth finding ways to make the event even more special. It’s important they enjoy it, but they won’t remember it forever and so a great birthday idea is to buy gifts they can look back on throughout their lives, as a reminder of the love and care you've always provided for them.

At month five babies will now be developing at a fast rate physically. I don’t mean in a muscle bound Sylvester Stallone (weird but would be pretty funny) way but you will really start to notice extending of arms and legs, back arching and also when lying on their back the lifting of the head and shoulders. Providing you put enough cushions around they may also be able to sit unaided for a few moments. Remember the beer can story? Always use soft pillows or cushions in case of a fall!

Well, this mummy-to-be is getting bigger by the day now. I’ve noticed, more than anything that the baby seems to be a little contortionist and likes to move regularly. My bump changes shape most days because he won’t sit still. I am getting to the point where my toes are becoming foreign objects to me. Sometimes I see them and I’m like “Ohhhh yeahhhh. I have toes. Note to self – must paint them before I become whale-like.”

Well done guys you’ve reached the four month stage and firmly established yourself as a member of one of the biggest clubs in the world, the Dad’s Club. It’s a great thing being a dad and anybody who tells you being a new dad is easy is talking a load of rubbish! You will have changed your fair share of stinking nappies (changing a baby girl’s nappy for me is far worse than a boy’s but that’s just my opinion) and also helped out with feeds in one way or another, whether sterilising bottles or making sure the lovely lady is comfortable and has everything she needs whilst she is feeding.
