All around the world, International Women's Day represents an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women while calling for greater equality.

Each year International Women's Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8th. The first International Women's Day was held in 1911 marking the economic, political and social achievements of women. Organisations, governments, charities, educational institutions, women's groups, corporations and the media celebrate the day.

Annually thousands of events are held around the world to inspire women and celebrate achievements. A global web of rich and diverse local activity connects women ranging from political rallies, business conferences, government activities and networking events through to local women's craft markets, theatric performances, fashion parades and more.

We all look up to strong, independent women. But how do we become one ourselves? Who inspires you as a woman? If you have a daughter, which contemporary women would you like her to look up to as she grows up and why?

Here are 20 inspirational quotes for women by some of the strongest women that will inspire and empower you - they are so true!
