Now that your baby is eight months old they are probably sitting well without support and maybe crawling about by bottom shuffling. This is definitely a time for having eyes in the back of your head as the saying goes. It’s amazing how quickly they can actually move. Stair gates are without a doubt required so at least you can keep them in one place and know that they will not fall downstairs. Although babies are quite supple and bouncy a fall top to bottom on stairs will certainly smart a little! They are also more than likely able to pull themselves up to a standing position whilst holding on to furniture. If you stand your baby up next to the sofa, they should be able to hold themselves up albeit hanging on for dear life and using the furniture for support.
