Living far from my extended family isn't easy. Don't get me wrong, I love living abroad. Still I get sad knowing that my parents and in-laws aren't forming the type of relationship with our children that they would have if we had never moved. When I talk to my friends who live within an ocean from their parents, they remind me that I'm not alone. Many children grow up far from their grandparents. Even families in the same city have a hard time seeing each other regularly. Our schedules are busy. Thankfully, the Internet has made it easier to stay connected, but it takes more than just the occasional email, Facebook, or blog update to form bonds.

Our family recently drove from central Germany to Zürich, Switzerland. Google maps will tell you that this trip should be about 6 hours, which may be true, if there’s no traffic or road works. Also, Google Maps really has no clue how many stops little kids will need.

It's now been several weeks since the famous Royal Baby first appeared. Please do me a favour and allow this American mother a moment to talk about her reaction.

I love inside information. I especially love sharing inside information. I lived in Orlando for 15 years before moving to Germany. I'm actually planning a trip to go back this fall and have been researching things to do in Orlando for children. That sounds crazy, doesn't it? Orlando, home of Disney World, Universal Studios, Sea World and smaller theme parks & activities aimed at children. True. But, for those of us with kids under 5 the theme parks are exhausting. Spending every day of a holiday at the theme parks does not sound like a break at all. Fortunately, the Central Florida area has many alternatives perfect for rest days from the theme parks.

When my son turned one week old, I took photos of him with my dSLR. I tried to recreate the makeshift studio the newborn photographer had made a few weeks earlier. I covered his nursing pillow with a plain coloured blanket and placed him on it. I ended up with three photos of him screaming his head off. The next week, I tried it again and continued doing so every week until he turned one.

Hello Small Steps Community! I'm really excited to share a few posts about life with two young kids. I have a 2-and-a-half-year old son and a 10 month old baby. Let me get this out right away: I love to travel with them. I love it so much that I started a blog just to encourage other families to travel. Don't worry; I'm not going to only write about that here.

Yes, the title of this post is deceiving. It makes it seem like I actually want to talk about travelling with my kids. But, I don't.
