Now that baby is only one month away from their first birthday, they are no longer the infant that cannot do anything without you. They still need plenty of care and support, but their growing independence is becoming apparent. They may walk while holding your hands and possibly hold out an arm or leg to help you dress them. At mealtimes they may be able to grip and drink from a cup (though some children will not be able to do this yet) and hand feed themselves an entire meal.

Ah, the joys. At the ten month stage your baby will probably be able to crawl well on their hands and knees. Many babies will start to crawl before ten months but will only start to master the skill now. Your baby will also be able to sit confidently and whilst walking holding on to furniture may be able to let go for a moment and stand alone.

Your baby will be getting closer and closer to fully-fledged walking. At this stage they can probably crawl upstairs and cruise, moving around upright while holding on to furniture. A few babies at nine months may also take a few steps-with support. Now this stage did make me laugh, it’s like watching a drunk stagger out of the pub on a Saturday night trying to get their balance. They should though be learning to master sitting down from a standing position.

Now that your baby is eight months old they are probably sitting well without support and maybe crawling about by bottom shuffling. This is definitely a time for having eyes in the back of your head as the saying goes. It’s amazing how quickly they can actually move. Stair gates are without a doubt required so at least you can keep them in one place and know that they will not fall downstairs. Although babies are quite supple and bouncy a fall top to bottom on stairs will certainly smart a little! They are also more than likely able to pull themselves up to a standing position whilst holding on to furniture. If you stand your baby up next to the sofa, they should be able to hold themselves up albeit hanging on for dear life and using the furniture for support.

Month Seven
Bouncing Baby.
Your baby can now support some of their weight on their legs and love to bounce. They should also be able to sit up unsupported (which will free hands for exploring, be aware) and will more than likely turn whilst sitting to reach a desired object.
I would strongly recommend one of those doorframe bouncers. Now I’m not saying all babies will enjoy these but ours did and we could leave her in it for hours, literally go down the shops, get some sleep in, go and wash the car, come back and she would still be bouncing will all the energy of a Duracell Bunny! (For those of you born after 1993 check the adverts on the internet and you will see what I mean!)

By six months your baby sees and hears the world almost as well as you do and their communication skills are expanding rapidly. Now I’m not saying you will be able to discuss the entire works of Shakespeare together, but you will be hearing plenty of squeals, babbling and bubbling sounds. Most babies at this age are repeating one syllable such as “ba,” “ga,” “da”. You can encourage your baby by repeating back and making a little game of it. “Sheep’s go baa,” and “da, da, dad.” You may feel like a bit of a fool at first but hey, you will soon get the hang of it.

At month five babies will now be developing at a fast rate physically. I don’t mean in a muscle bound Sylvester Stallone (weird but would be pretty funny) way but you will really start to notice extending of arms and legs, back arching and also when lying on their back the lifting of the head and shoulders. Providing you put enough cushions around they may also be able to sit unaided for a few moments. Remember the beer can story? Always use soft pillows or cushions in case of a fall!

Well done guys you’ve reached the four month stage and firmly established yourself as a member of one of the biggest clubs in the world, the Dad’s Club. It’s a great thing being a dad and anybody who tells you being a new dad is easy is talking a load of rubbish! You will have changed your fair share of stinking nappies (changing a baby girl’s nappy for me is far worse than a boy’s but that’s just my opinion) and also helped out with feeds in one way or another, whether sterilising bottles or making sure the lovely lady is comfortable and has everything she needs whilst she is feeding.

A lot of changes occur during the three month stage but remember all babies are different and will develop at different stages. So, if your little one is doing something and you think they are the next child prodigy try and not to get too hyped, likewise, if they are a little slow on the uptake with things that other babies are doing then don’t worry, all in good time.

Well back to work for most of us, this can be a bit of a testing time if, like most your baby is waking several times in the night. Sleepless nights can take their toll. I used to start the working day with at least three mugs of coffee before seven thirty followed by plenty more throughout the day. For me it was a choice of falling asleep at my desk or coping with the caffeine induced headaches, and after a verbal warning from my manager, I decided it was best to opt for the latter. It does get easier as the weeks go by and you do get used to whatever amount of sleep you are getting, and to be honest most employers totally understand.

Okay, so you have left the hospital! For those few of you who had a home birth you are at least spared the journey home from hospital. Albeit quite exciting the moment your little bundle of joy is strapped into your spangly new car seat, that sudden feeling of shock, horror hits home!

Well where do I start? You will definitely see changes in your family and how they act towards you. If anything, especially with parents, they seem to treat you even less of an adult even though you too have now brought life into the world and have the biggest responsibility you could possibly ever have. They will give advice on how to bring up your child even though it may be a while since you were born, and let’s face it, things change. It’s great to have help but sometimes this can be a little too much and seem more like interfering. Just remember that they only have your best interests at heart.

Okay there seems to be nappies for everything these days. Newborn, toddler, nappies for night times, nappies for swimming, crawling, nappies for active babies, the list goes on! I’m surprised they don’t do nappies for parents looking for nappies, as you spend that much time initially looking that you’re likely to wet yourself in the aisle of a supermarket, and that’s without assessing the different brands.
