You can never take any chances when it comes to your children. Drowning is a very real threat that deserves far more attention than it receives. Just one little mistake can have huge repercussions. We have joined forces with Mailsports to promote awareness and share with you information of potential hazards and how to avoid them.
Perhaps one of the most shocking facts is just how little depth is required to take a life. A small child can drown in less than two centimetres of water; and of the 28 children under 15 who drowned in 2008; seven were under five and drowned in the bathtub. This figure proves just how important it is to remain vigilant at all times, even in your own household.
It’s never too early to start teaching your children good safety habits. Getting swimming lessons can be an excellent starting point and will help your children build confidence in and around water, which is without a doubt one of the most effective safety precautions. Some leisure centres will even run specialist classes for new-borns. Find a class near you on our
Local Information pages or on our
Local Events Calendar.
When it comes to water safety, there’s absolutely no room for error. Make just one mistake and you’ll have to live with the consequences for the rest of your life. To truly understand the dangers your children face in and around water, and to learn about the appropriate preventative measures, read our Water Safety for Children infographic.
